National Security Educational Program (NSEP)

The National Security Educational Program (NSEP) is a Department of Defense (DoD) sponsored program that promotes the education, recruitment and retention of outstanding undergraduate and graduate science, mathematics and engineering students. Students are offered these scholarships and fellowships in exchange for a period of employment of up to four years with DoD.

Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Education Program

The Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Education Program is a DoD sponsored program that promotes the education, recruitment and retention of outstanding undergraduate and graduate science, mathematics and engineering students. Students are offered scholarships and fellowships in exchange for a period of employment with DoD in the areas specified.

Student Education Employment Program (STEP and SCEP)

The Student Education and Employment Programs provide student the opportunity to work part time during the school year and full time on breaks and during the summer.

In the Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP), the nature of the work does not have to be related to the student’s educational program and career goals.

The Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) provides experience directly related to the student’s educational program and career goals. Students in the SCEP may be converted to full-time permanent position within 120 days after satisfactory completion of their diploma, certificate or degree requirements and successful completion of at least 640 hours of work experience.

Disability Programs

DTRA hires people with disabilities, including veterans with thirty percent or more disabilities. The federal government recognizes that people with disabilities have a right to full and fair consideration for any job for which they apply.

Workforce Recruitment Program for College Students with Disabilities

The Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP) is a recruitment and referral program that connects Federal sector employers nationwide with highly motivated postsecondary students and recent graduates with disabilities who are eager to prove their abilities in the workplace primarily through summer or in some cases permanent jobs. Co-sponsored by the Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy and DoD with the participation of many other Federal agencies, the WRP has provided employment opportunities for nearly 4,500 students since 1995. Students represent all majors and range from college freshmen to graduate and law students. Information from these student interviews is compiled in a searchable database.

Presidential Management Fellows Program

The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program is designed to attract outstanding graduate students and individuals with advanced Degrees in a wide variety of academic disciplines to leadership and Management careers in the Federal service. These individuals are hired into Pay Band 1 or GS - 9 with full performance to the Pay Band 2. Participants are required to complete rotational assignments. After successful completion of the 2-year program, DTRA may convert the PMF to a permanent Federal position at the Pay Band 2 or GS-12 equivalent level. This program is managed by the Office of Personnel Management.
