The Department of Defense (DoD) has a long-standing commitment to providing equal employment opportunities for people with disabilities. The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, requires DoD to provide accommodations for employees with disabilities and make its programs and activities accessible.

A Reasonable Accommodation is any modification or adjustment to a job or the work environment that will enable a qualified applicant or employee with a disability to participate in the application process or to perform essential job functions.  Reasonable Accommodation also includes adjustments to ensure that a qualified individual with a disability has rights and privileges in employment equal to those of employees without disabilities.  For example, agencies may:

•Provide Ergonomic Assessment for furniture modification
•Provide accessible technology or other workplace adaptive equipment
•Modify work schedule or offer telework options

Reasonable Accommodations serve two fundamental purposes:

1.Reasonable Accommodations remove barriers that prevent people with disabilities from applying for, or performing, jobs for which they are qualified.

2.Reasonable Accommodations enable agencies to expand the pool of qualified workers, thus allowing the agencies to benefit from the talents of people who might otherwise be arbitrarily barred from employment.

DTRA adheres to applicable federal regulations and guidelines and provides Reasonable Accommodations for qualified employees and applicants with disabilities.  We also provide Reasonable Accommodation for the known physical or mental limitations of qualified employees and applicants with disabilities when those disabilities or limitations are properly documented.

How to request a Reasonable Accommodation:

To initiate your request for a Reasonable Accommodation, you should engage with their new supervisor, either verbally or in writing.  You will be required to submit your written request, utilizing DTRA Form 123, available through the Agency's Disability Program Manager (DPM) at, 703-767-6184.

As soon as you have completed the form and have the required medical documents (a letter from your health care provider on official letterhead, describing your medical limitations), you should give the completed form and copies of the documents to the DPM to process your request.  The DPM will work with you and your supervisor throughout the interactive process to ensure that the appropriate accommodation is provided.

For additional information on Reasonable Accommodations, please contact the Disability Program Manager via e-mail at or phone at 703-767-6184, or contact your new supervisor.
