Even though DTRA and SCC-WMD are co-located on Ft. Belvoir, Va., they each fall under a different chain of command within the Department of Defense.

As a combat support agency, DTRA is responsible to the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense (Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Defense Programs), who in turn is responsible to the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics.

Similarly, SCC-WMD is an element of the U.S. Strategic Command, one of the ten unified commands within the Department of Defense.

DTRA and SCC-WMD are led by a senior civil servant, a member of the Senior Executive Service, who is dual-hatted as the director of both organizations. Each organization has its own deputy director and subordinate staff, although there is one dual-hatted command senior enlisted leader, responsible for offering an enlisted perspective on operational issues and missions.
