Freedom of Information Act

The Freedom of Information Act provides that any person has a right, enforceable in court, to obtain access to federal agency records, except to the extent that such records (or portions of them) are protected from public disclosure by an exemption.

REQUESTING RECORDS THROUGH THE FOIA

The DTRA FOIA/Privacy Office receives a multitude of requests for records on a wide-range of topics. Submitting a request for records can be easier once a requestor knows how to comply with the regulations and procedures governing release of government documents. Therefore, we recommend that you review the information provided on this page before submitting a request for DTRA records.

Please note that this office does not process FOIA requests for the entire Department of Defense (DoD). Please direct requests related to the Military Services, Combatant Commands, or other Defense Agencies to the appropriate organization/component that maintains those record(s). Before submitting a FOIA request to DTRA, please check to see if the information you seek is already in our electronic reading room or provided on other DoD website.

To request DTRA records, you must submit a written FOIA request. For more information on how to submit a proper FOIA request, please see the DTRA FOIA Handbook for further guidance. You may also contact the DTRA FOIA/PA office with any questions you may have.

For more information and answers to frequently asked questions, please visit the official DoD FOIA Website.

ELECTRONIC READING ROOM

The DTRA Electronic Reading Room displays copies of DTRA records that are publicly available either (1) proactively at our discretion or (2) because they are "frequently requested." Some records may be redacted to remove non-public information.
