KIRTLAND Air Force Base, NM –
The Defense Threat Reduction Agency’s Albuquerque (DTRA-ABQ) Office will conduct an official groundbreaking ceremony in recognition of a recently awarded Military Construction (MILCON) contract to Hensel Phelps Construction Company on 9 Dec. 21 at 10:30AM. Located on Kirkland Air Force Base, NM, DTRA members will soon occupy a modern 76,000 square foot controlled access space administrative facility. Lead construction agents from the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and the DTRA ABQ Engineering office will manage the two-year effort.
The MILCON project will accommodate more than 250 members, consolidating three separate buildings into one administrative building. Functional areas include controlled areas, administrative areas, private offices and a seismic laboratory. This effort will utilize a traditional design-bid-build delivery method, which will allow for greater cost-saving measures and an easily managed sequential construction process.
Agency members currently occupy several 1950’s era dormitories that engineers converted to office space in 1972. Throughout recent years, DTRA-ABQ engineers encountered faltering utility and structural systems that require costly repairs or demolition. The MILCON project is the most cost-effective means of ensuring the safety of DTRA personnel.
