DTRA Technician Awarded for Enhancing Joint Strategic Deterrence Mission

By DTRA PA Defense Threat Reduction Agency

FAIRFIELD, Calif. – A U.S. Navy missile technician assigned to the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the nation’s strategic deterrence mission, receiving the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal in a ceremony at Travis Air Force Base on May 20.

Chief Petty Officer Darren Hallhuz, of DTRA’s Global Threat Reduction Directorate, was honored for his critical role in bridging the knowledge gap between the joint services during a recent training initiative. The award specifically commends his leadership in fostering knowledge transfer between DTRA’s Navy and Air Force missile experts and sailors from the U.S. Navy’s ballistic and guided-missile submarine force.

"Chief Hallhuz’s commitment to technical excellence and joint-service collaboration directly enhances our strategic capabilities," said Lt. Col. Ronald J. Barnhart, DTRA's commanding officer at Travis AFB, who presented the award. "His efforts ensure that the next generation of strategic weapons experts has a comprehensive understanding of the integrated, multi-service nature of our national defense."

The recognition stems from Hallhuz's exceptional support during the "Reverse Strategic Weapons Systems (SWS) Week," an educational event that provides submarine crews a behind-the-scenes look at the weapons systems they operate. CPO Hallhuz played a pivotal role in coordinating the event, accelerating the development of junior Sailors and strengthening the ties between DTRA personnel and the Navy's strategic submarine fleet.

This achievement underscores DTRA's commitment to providing critical support and expertise across the Department of Defense, reinforcing the readiness and lethality of the nation's nuclear triad.
